Abstract: Development of a musical instrument for Virtual Reality [DE]

Frederik Raumann, Development of a musical instrument for Virtual Reality, Hochschule Düsseldorf, Bachelor Thesis, 21.10.2019.

Virtual reality (VR) has made remarkable progress in recent decades. VR systems are becoming more affordable and a large amount of content has already been produced. As a musician the question arises: Which possibilities does VR reveal for music and how can it enhance musical creativity? This work gives an overview on the history and the status quo of VR musical instruments (VRMI) and describes in detail the creation of a completely new VRMI with automated harmonic support. For this, a head-mounted display (HTC VIVE) and the visual programming interface VVVV were used, whereby the notes are sent via the MIDI protocol, so that any VST plug-in can be chosen to generate the sounds. In addition, a binauralizer (AMBEO Orbit) was implemented to create the illusion of spatial audio using HRTF (head-related transfer function). The prototype was successfully tested by both musicians and non-musicians and a following questionnaire was evaluated.
