The Robert E. Lee Monument in Charlottesville, Virginia was one of the first sites of clashes between White Supremacists and Black Lives Matter protests in 2017. Since then, we have witnessed countless images of statues and monuments being destroyed, vandalized, and toppled by protesters or, in some cases, by authorities themselves under public pressure. The deconstruction of monuments has become a globally accepted symbolic act, challenging the once accepted collective memory, and the image of deconstruction has also evolved into a new aesthetic of its own.
