The volumetric recording of excavations on construction sites is a cost-relevant factor
and even today is often still carried out in daily construction site operations in
manual detail work. Cost-effective sensors for depth detection enable the semi-automatic
recording of excavations. Augmented reality can provide the necessary feedback for
this process. A prototype consisting of a tablet with an integrated camera and a
lidar scanner will be presented. The detection of the volume regarding usability and
accuracy with the use of augmented reality is tested and evaluated. An algorithm is
developed to determine the volume using rays with the support of a graphic engine.
The algorithm is robust against volumes that are not completely closed. Operation,
verification, and visualization take place through practical use of augmented reality.
