Abstract: Investigation of various methods of video coding with alpha channel [DE]
Lara Bertram, Investigation of various methods of video coding with alpha channel, Hochschule Düsseldorf, Bachelor Thesis, 31.03.2020.
In this work different methods of video coding with alpha channel are theoretically and
practically analyzed. By doing so the steps of video coding are examined in general and
in relation to alpha channel coding. The characteristics of these channels are carved out.
While doing so the following research questions are investigated. Which types of alpha
channel are there, how are they compressed and is it possible to use the characteristics
of these channels in the coding process? This introduction is followed by an examination
of different coding algorithms and container formats which are capable of alpha channel
coding. Here it is analyzed if there are significant differences between the coding algorithms
and which ones show the best quality in relation to various criteria. After compressing
a video by using those different coding algorithms, the resulting videos are compared with
the use of some video quality metrics. At the end there is an interpretation of the different
results. The basis for this work are evaluations of different literatures, tests of the
coding algorithms and the analysis of video quality measurements.
