Abstract: Advantages and Limitations of Immersive 3D Polygonal Mesh Modelling in Virtual Reality [DE]
Philipp Ladwig, Advantages and Limitations of Immersive 3D Polygonal Mesh Modelling in Virtual Reality, Hochschule Düsseldorf, Master thesis, 12.5.2017.
The dream of modelling 3D objects at the speed of thought has largely remained unfulfilled. A long line of research is evidence that there are certain pending problems for immersive modelling such as complex interactions, missing methods for accurate alignment of objects or problems with fatigue of body parts over a certain time. Anyway, there is also strong evidence in recent research that 3D modelling in VR contains plenty of new opportunities and a significant potential for accelerating the creation process of virtual objects. Instead of using an ordinary monoscopic monitor and a computer mouse, Virtual Reality brings literally a new dimension to the possibilities of modelling. This thesis introduces a new immersive 3D modeller for polygonal meshes and addresses certain pending problems, which are raised in other recent developments. The efficiency of the developed application is evaluated within user studies for revealing the advantages and limitations of immersive modelling of polygonal 3D meshes.
