Clustering of sound sources within resolution cones

The image shows how human localization error measurements can be used to optimal manage sound spatialization resources using sound source clustering in which proximate sound sources are mixed together and represented by a single (virtual) sound source. The cones on the right side visualize horizontal and vertical unsigned localization errors for a broadband signal; ellipses axis denote error in azimuth and elevation [data taken from Makous and Middlebrooks, JASA, 87(5): 2188-220, 1990]. In front, localization errors in azimuth are smaller than in elevation. To the side, localization errors in elevation are smaller than in azimuth. Localization errors in the back are higher than in front. Click on the image for viewing the model using a VRML browser.
