Abstract: Development of a mobile VR game for the treatment of patients with phantom limb pain following upper arm amputation using motion sensors on the stump [DE]

Jochen Henneberg, Development of a mobile VR game for the treatment of patients with phantom limb pain following upper arm amputation using motion sensors on the stump, Hochschule Düsseldorf, Bachelor thesis, 14.11.2018.

After amputation, the majority of patients suffers from phantom limb pain. This painful sensation in a missing limb often leads to a severe impairment to quality of life. One promising therapeutic approach is to give the patient a visual illusion of the missing limb. Virtual and augmented reality can be used to implement this in an immersive way. Within the scope of the research project GAPP (Gamification Against Phantom Pain) and this work, a mobile VR therapy application has been developed which is meant to enable patients to train independently and anywhere against their phantom limb pain. The focus is on the visualization and control of a virtual arm. The control principle is based on inverse kinematics for the implementation of more complex motion sequences using an inertial measurement unit, which is attached to the stump of the patient. By designing the application as a game (serious game), the motivation of the patient should be increased. In addition, the resulting application was examined and evaluated in the form of guideline-based expert interviews regarding its technical functionality, usability and visual impact on the user.
